Subject: Supporting Surrogacy Law Reform
by email
Dear [insert MP’s name],
As my local MP, I am contacting you to ask you to represent my views on surrogacy, following the Law Commission’s report and draft legislation which was published on 29th March 2023 (https://www.lawcom.gov.uk/project/surrogacy/). I have suggested a few ways that you can do this, including joining an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Surrogacy, which we are looking to reconstitute.
Surrogacy is a subject which is very important to me because [please add a short paragraph[s] with your personal story, including why surrogacy is important to you and any problems that the current law has caused for you].
As recommended in the Law Commission report I’d like to see the following changes to UK law:
- A new pathway for surrogacy in which intended parents can be recognised as legal parents from birth, when supported by Regulated Surrogacy Organisations
- Greater safeguards for surrogates and intended parents entering into surrogacy agreements
- A surrogacy register so that people born through surrogacy can find out about their origins
- Removal of the need for surrogates’ partners to consent to parental orders
- More guidance on what counts as a ‘reasonable expense’ within a surrogacy agreement.
I appreciate the demands on your time and that this is a busy time for you but I would be extremely grateful if you can represent my experience and wishes for reform by taking forward at least one of the actions below:
- Join an APPG on Surrogacy: please contact sarah.jones@surrogacyuk.org to register your interest and for further details.
- Write to the Minister responsible (Baroness Merron, PUSS at DHSC), asking them to put time aside for the bill to be debated in the current parliament.
- Submit a Parliamentary Question asking about the Government’s intention to progress the draft bill and highlighting the importance of surrogacy law reform.
Thank you for taking the time to read this email. I am very happy to talk to you about this in more detail and appreciate your support on this matter. I’d also be very happy to come and visit you at one of your surgeries to discuss this in more detail.
Kind regards
