“Surrogacy Didn’t Just Help Create Families –
It Became Part of Ours Too”

SurrogacyUK

Outside of surrogacy, life is wonderfully busy.

I’m a single mum to four amazing children. Three were conceived through IVF with the help of a sperm donor during a previous same-sex relationship, and my youngest was conceived naturally. I also donated my eggs twice before becoming a surrogate, so helping other people build their families has always been part of my story.

I’ve worked full-time for the UK’s leading confectionery manufacturer for the last 20 years, and when I’m not at work, everything revolves around making memories with my children. We love caravan holidays, trips to Turkey and, of course, SurrogacyUK socials.

My children absolutely love them just as much as I do.

If you asked my friends to describe me, they’d probably laugh and say I’m a little bit crazy for becoming a surrogate. But they also tell me it takes a very special person to do it. One of my children’s teachers even calls me an angel, which is incredibly kind, although I don’t see myself that way. I just know I’ve been lucky enough to help other people in the same way someone once helped me.

How it all began

My journey towards surrogacy really started during my own IVF journey.

When I was pregnant with my twins, I met another pregnant woman who was carrying a baby as a surrogate for her brother and sister-in-law. I’d never spoken to a surrogate before, and that conversation stayed with me.

Once I knew my own family was complete, and after separating from my husband, I realised the time was right. I wanted to help other people experience the joy of becoming parents, but I also wanted to achieve something that was entirely my own.

Having needed a sperm donor to create my own family, I understood just how life-changing another person’s generosity could be. Without that donor, my children wouldn’t be here.

Donating my eggs felt like a natural way to give something back, and surrogacy simply felt like the next step.

I knew I didn’t want any more children myself, but I also couldn’t imagine never being pregnant again. Surrogacy gave me the chance to experience pregnancy while helping someone else’s dream come true.

More than I ever imagined

I had no idea just how much surrogacy would change my life.

Of course, I hoped I’d help create families, but I never expected to gain so many wonderful friendships or become part of such an incredible community.

Most of all, I never imagined I’d become best friends with my intended parents.

My first intended mum is one of my closest friends. We speak every single day, sending long voice notes, sharing happy moments, frustrations, funny stories and even what we’re having for tea. She was also my birth partner when I carried my second surrogate baby, which says everything about the relationship we’ve built together.

Surrogacy doesn’t end when the baby is born. For me, it’s been the beginning of lifelong friendships.

Finding my people

I’d joined a few Facebook groups while I was researching surrogacy, including SurrogacyUK, but everything changed when I attended my first social.

The moment I walked through the door, I felt like I belonged.

There was no awkwardness or feeling like an outsider. Everyone welcomed me straight away, and I knew I’d found the organisation I wanted to be part of.

Since then, the community has given me so much more than I ever expected. I’ve made genuine friendships with people who are there for me through surrogacy and through everyday life too.

It’s also become a huge part of my children’s lives. They’ve made their own friends through the community, and we all look forward to catching up with everyone at socials. It feels like seeing extended family.

Something just for me

Before becoming a surrogate, everything I did was for somebody else.

Being a surrogate was the first thing I chose to do simply because it mattered to me.

Helping people become parents was something I believed in wholeheartedly, and I’m incredibly proud that I followed my heart and did it, regardless of what anyone else thought.

Nothing compares to seeing the faces of intended parents when they first see that positive pregnancy test.

Then, when their baby is finally born, you see another transformation happen.

They become parents.

You can actually see the change in them, and knowing you’ve played a part in that moment is something that’s impossible to put into words.

More than creating a child

People often think surrogacy is just about helping someone have a baby.

For me, it’s so much bigger than that.

Yes, it creates families, but it has also given me and my children friendships, experiences and memories we would never have had otherwise.

We’ve travelled all over the country visiting intended parents and attending socials. My children have experienced places and met people they would never have known if surrogacy hadn’t become part of our lives.

Our wider family has become part of those journeys too. They’ve been invited to baby showers, Christmas celebrations, Easter events and so many special occasions that none of us ever expected to be part of.

Surrogacy hasn’t just created families for other people.

It’s expanded ours.

Clearing up the biggest misconception

The one thing I wish people understood is that surrogates aren’t handing over their own babies.

The baby was never mine.

I was trusted to look after my intended parents’ embryo, nurture it safely throughout pregnancy and, when the baby was born, return them to exactly where they belonged.

With their parents.

That’s never felt like giving something away.

It’s simply bringing a family’s journey full circle.

A family like no other

My own family knew that once I’d decided to become a surrogate, nothing was going to change my mind.

They’ve supported me every step of the way, even while worrying about the practical realities of juggling pregnancy, a full-time job and raising four children.

Without their support, I couldn’t have helped complete one family by giving a little girl her sibling, helped another family welcome their baby boy, or now be carrying a third surrogate baby for another hopeful mum and dad.

Every journey has become part of all of our lives.

Never just a community

If I had to describe the Surrogacy UK community to someone who’s never experienced it, I’d simply say it’s like one big family.

Every person is different. Some are funny, some are colourful, some are wonderfully eccentric, but every single one has an incredible story to tell.

New people are welcomed with open arms, and before long they feel like they’ve always belonged.

I’m incredibly proud to be one small part of that.

Being part of the SurrogacyUK community means so much to me and my children.

Together we’ve helped complete one family by giving a little girl a sibling, welcomed a beautiful baby boy into another family, and we’re now helping another mum and dad realise their dream of becoming parents.

Along the way, we’ve gained friendships that will last a lifetime.

For us, that’s what surrogacy is really about.

Never alone

The Surrogacy UK community is made up of people from every walk of life, with different personalities, interests and experiences, but everyone is there because they believe in helping create families.

Whatever stage you’re at, you’ll find your people.

Being part of the SurrogacyUK community means you’re no longer doing this alone.

Whatever you’re feeling, someone else understands it.

We’ve got you.
