A surrogate is something you are, not just something you do

SurrogacyUK

The question that stayed with us

A little while ago, one of our members asked a question on our online forum that really stayed with us.

She’d been through a difficult time trying to conceive with her Intended Parents. As so many of us know, life doesn’t always follow the path we’d hoped for and, after everything she’d experienced, she quietly asked:

“Can I even call myself a surrogate?”

It wasn’t really a question about definitions or labels.
It was a question about belonging.

The answer came from community

The replies came quickly.

Not one person questioned it.
Not one person hesitated.

Instead, surrogates from across our community all gave the same answer:

Yes.
Absolutely.
One hundred percent.

What mattered most was who answered.

It wasn’t the SurrogacyUK team offering reassurance — it was surrogates responding to another surrogate without a moment’s hesitation.

To us, that says everything about this community.

A question more people ask than you think

Her question came after a difficult experience trying to conceive, but we don’t think it was really about that.

It was about wondering whether she still belonged.

Over the years, we’ve spoken to members who’ve quietly wondered the same thing:

“I’ve taken a break. Do I still belong?”

“Life is so busy at the moment. Have I drifted too far away?”

“I’m not sure if I’ll do another journey. Is there still a place for me?”

“I haven’t had a surrogate baby. Am I still part of the community?”

Belonging doesn't have conditions

Our answer is exactly the same as the one our members gave that day.

Yes.
Absolutely.
One hundred percent.

And we’d say exactly the same to our known egg donors too.

Whether you’re waiting for the right time, taking a break, reflecting on a previous journey or simply staying connected to the community, you are still a valued part of SurrogacyUK.

Life rarely follows the plan

When people first join SurrogacyUK, it’s easy to imagine the journey following a fairly straightforward path.

Learn about surrogacy.
Find teammates.
Journey.
Birth.

Simple.

But anyone who’s been part of this community for a while knows life is rarely that tidy.

Sometimes work takes over.
Sometimes your own family needs you.
Sometimes your health changes.
Sometimes plans don’t work out in the way you’d hoped.

And sometimes life simply asks you to pause for a while.

None of those things take away who you are or what this community means to you.

Surrogacy is about more than the journey

Of course, journeys matter. They change lives and create families.

But if you ask many of our surrogates and known egg donors what they treasure most about SurrogacyUK, they rarely talk about the paperwork or the official milestones.

They talk about the friendships they’ve made.

The people who simply “get it”.

The conversations that happen when someone understands exactly what you’re feeling because they’ve been there too.

That’s what community looks like, and you don’t have to be actively on a journey to be part of it.

Everyone has something to offer

Sometimes we think about contributing to SurrogacyUK in terms of volunteering or helping at events.

Those things are wonderful, but being part of a community often looks much simpler than that.

It might be replying to someone’s post on the HUB.

Sharing your experience with someone who’s just starting out.

Welcoming someone who’s joined for the first time.

Checking in on someone who’s having a difficult week.

Or simply reminding another surrogate or known egg donor that they aren’t alone.

Sometimes just being there is enough.

Sometimes your story is enough, even if it didn’t end in the way you imagined.

Communities aren’t built by people doing extraordinary things every day.

They’re built by ordinary people who care about one another.

Introducing the Surrogate HUB

If you’ve ever started looking into surrogacy online, you’ll know there’s no shortage of information.

The challenge isn’t finding information – it’s knowing which advice is accurate, up to date and based on real experience. It can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re just starting to explore whether surrogacy is right for you.

That’s exactly why we’re creating the Surrogate HUB.

The HUB is a welcoming space for anyone who’s thinking about becoming a surrogate. You don’t need to be a member of SurrogacyUK to be part of it. Whether you’re simply curious, doing your research or seriously considering taking the next step, the HUB is somewhere you can learn, ask questions and connect with experienced surrogates who understand exactly where you are.

We’re building the HUB step by step, and over the coming months we’ll be adding more information, resources, podcasts, newsletters and opportunities to learn about surrogacy from people with real lived experience.

One of the things we’re most excited about is our brand new discussion forum.

A place where people considering surrogacy can chat with experienced surrogates, ask questions, share thoughts and learn from one another in a friendly, supportive environment.

We know becoming a surrogate isn’t something you decide overnight. It’s a journey of learning, asking questions and building confidence, and we hope the HUB becomes a trusted place to do all of that.

Most of all, we hope it reflects the kind of community we are.

One built on kindness, openness and shared experience, where everyone is welcome to learn at their own pace.
