Our first Surrogacy UK conference was completely overwhelming – in a good way. We arrived the night before, and had no idea what to expect. It was 9:30pm and we had lost all ability to make friends. What on earth had we got ourselves into?
An early night and we were ready. We shuffled over to the newbie area and waited. Luckily, a lot of people there had been in our position before. We were invited into conversation and felt a little bit more at ease.
Hearing from a surrogate changed the tone of the day. She talked to us about the process and cleared up the areas of surrogacy that have the power to instill fear – expenses and the process of getting your name on the birth certificate. Hearing a surrogate talk about these things openly and honestly was a balm for our concerns.
The conference schedule ended with a series of success stories. Months squeezed into minutes, a rollercoaster of emotions articulated in simple but powerful words. It was incredible to see the relationship between IPs (Intended Parents) and their surrogate, and even more incredible to see that it worked and what that meant to everyone involved.
The day ended with a quiz and a social event and we could mingle more. It was at this moment that we felt fully a part of something great.
To all the newbies out there who have yet to attend a conference or social with Surrogacy UK – do, and don’t be afraid to talk to someone. Anyone. They’re all there for the same reason and they’re all invested in making SUK great.
To all the people who made us feel incredibly welcome at our first SUK conference, thank you!
