Ethics Committee Membership Recruitment

Surrogacy UK is the leading not-for-profit organisation that supports the creation of families and promotes altruistic surrogacy in the UK. It helps surrogates to meet intended parents; educates and advises people at all stages of their surrogacy journey; and, works with external stakeholders to improve the experiences and outcomes for surrogates, intended parents and their families.

Surrogacy UK is in the process of setting up an Ethics Committee (EC) to ensure that the organisation and its members deliver this mission as ethically as possible. The EC is an independent group of experts from various fields that will advise the Board of Trustees about relevant ethical matters. This includes issues relating internal procedures (such as membership reviews, training, and surrogacy journeys) and external policies (such as public policy positions).

Membership Vacancies

Surrogacy UK has appointed an Ethics Committee Chair and invites applications for Committee members. In particular, vacancies exist for:

  • Healthcare professionals (including, but not limited to: GPs, midwives, mental health professionals, nurses, obs and gyn specialists, fertility specialists, etc.)
  • Legal professionals
  • Social workers
  • Psychologists
  • Professional ethicists
  • Lay persons.

Applications from Surrogacy UK members are welcome, but we especially encourage those without Surrogacy UK affiliation. All positions are voluntary and report to the Chair.

Responsibilities of Surrogacy UK Ethics Committee members are to:

  • Discuss ethical issues arising at monthly meetings and to assist in formulating advice for the Board of Trustees when appropriate
  • Stay abreast of ethical issues relating to surrogacy
  • Help deliver Surrogacy UK’s aims as ethically as possible
  • Fulfill the purpose of the Ethics Committee, as documented in the Terms of Reference.

Surrogacy UK Ethics Committee members will have several of the following competencies:

  • An understanding or experience of the UK surrogacy journey, or a willingness to learn about this journey
  • An appreciation of Surrogacy UK’s values and activities
  • Interest in and experience of exploring complex, nuanced ethics issues
  • Good communication (including listening) and team working skills
  • Experience of serving on an ethics committee.
